Adventurous
Super Truck tour
The Reykjanes peninsula, to the southwest of Reykjavik, is quite
young in geological terms. Signs of volcanic activity (such as
vast black lava fields with sparse vegetation, impressive
volcanoes, and hot mud springs) are everywhere on the peninsula.
You will experience the dichotomy of a very harsh landscape and
the difficulties it can create on the one hand and, on the other
hand, how unique Icelandic ways of life have adapted to these
difficulties and have taken advantage of its power. Another
notable highlight of the tour includes our drive on the beaches
of the geothermal wonder, Lake Kleifarvatn. Following the big
earthquakes of 2000 the water level of the lake decreased by
five meters but is now slowly reaching its normal level again. |

This is a
magnificent tour over the Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull
glaciers. Between the ice and snowfields we visit Hekla, the
most famous of Iceland's volcanoes, which last erupted in 2000.
On Heimaey Island in the Westmann Islands there's still clear
evidence of the famous destruction to the island and its town
caused by an eruption in 1973. A new island, Surtsey rose out of
the sea a little further to the south in an eruption that
started in 1963. Other places of interest en route include
Thingvellir, site of the world's oldest parliament, the Gullfoss
golden waterfall, and Geyser – one of the world's outstanding
geothermal areas and the origin of the English word "geyser". |

The drive along
the fjord of Eyjafjörður provides us with a splendid view of
Akureyri, often referred to as the Capital of the North. On our
way to Goðafoss waterfall we travel through the valley of
Fnjóskadalur with its lovely meandering river.
Towards noon we take a break for lunch in Reykjahlíð village.
After noon refreshments we proceed to Krafla mountain, past the
power station bearing the same name. This power project is
unusual in Iceland because it relies on geothermal steam energy
for its operation.
Our stop is at Víti ("Hell"), an explosive crater in the slopes
of Krafla. After visiting this volcanic location, we travel on
for a view of Hverarönd, with its sizzling and bubbling sulphur
mud pots. Grjótagjá is our next stop, where there used to be a
natural, geothermal bathing spot. The final stop in this scenic
district is at Dimmuborgir, Dark Castles, where towering lava
formations characterise the surrounding landscape. After a brief
rest stop in Reykjahlíð village we return to Akureyri in time
for travellers to catch the evening flight to Reykjavík. |

Surtsey was
formed by a submarine volcanic eruption in the 1960s, while an
eruption on Heimaey in 1973 submerged half its town in lava and
ash.
Your flight lands on Heimaey, at which time you'll be taken on a
guided coach tour spotlighting some of the most interesting
features of the island, where nature has sculpted a fascinating
landscape teeming with diverse bird and animal life, including
the world's largest puffin colony.

The interior
route to Landmannalaugar crosses lava fields, small rivers,
black ash and scoria desert, and passes volcanic craters, which
make up an eerie lunar- type landscape.
Landmannalaugar is surrounded by colourful mountains due to
millennia of volcanic activity in the area. Possibility to bathe
in a warm brook, remember to bring along swim-suit and towel
(please note that use of soap is strictly forbidden).
On the way back to Reykjavík the tour will drive along the roots
of the world famous and quite active volcano Mt. Hekla but the
latest eruption was in the year 2000.

We start by
heading east through the fertile farmlands of southern Iceland.
We trek towards Mt. Hekla, Iceland's most active volcano. The
variations in the lava and vegetation shaped by the forces of
erosion create a colorful and spectacular arena for the volcano.
Hekla has erupted about 20 times since the country was settled.
We drive right up to the edge of the newest lava field from the
year 2000, and if weather permits we drive up along the
volcano's ridge, which is 900 meters above sea level, for a
splendid view of the surrounding area.
From here we drive on over a really rugged mountain track past
lava fields, explosion crater and hot springs up to
Hrafntinnusker, famous for its beautiful obsidian rocks. We go
on the Torfajökull glacier area, which is the largest high-temparature
geothermal area in Iceland. The mountain view is spectacular and
at the top we enjoy a panorama of 8 glaciers. From here we go to
Landmannalaugar for a relaxing bath in the outdoors.
Finally we advance down Dómadalur lava fields, the landscape
barren from the fallout ash of Hekla's last eruption. We pass by
some pumice excavations on our way back to Reykjavík. We will,
in fact, have completely circled Hekla ... the entrance to Hell.

Departing from
Reykjavík, we make the 25-minute flight to the island town of
Heimaey, enjoying a superb aerial view of the newly born island
of Surtsey -visibility, of course, permitting. On landing at
Heimaey, a private coach takes you on a tour of the island,
where you will witness a volcanic crater, still-warm lava and
half-buried houses from the island's infamous 1973 volcanic
eruption.
From the Westmann Islands, the flight proceeds to the mainland
and along the edge of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, taking in
the wellknown volcano Hekla, which last erupted in 2000. Then
fly over the spectacular waterfall Gullfoss, and on to Geyser -
one of the world's most famous geothermal areas. An
unforgettably dramatic experience.
