Operation: May - SeptemberDay 1:
Arrival Overnight stay in Reykjavík
Day 2:
South Shore From Reykjavík head through the town of Hveragerði and
the surrounding fertile farmlands, noting the numerous glacial
rivers on the way to Skógar. Continue to Dyrhólaey, a nature
reserve, ready to explore. Discover the former site of a
12th-century Catholic convent at Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Overnight in
Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.
Day 3:
Skaftafell National Park - Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon Depart from
Kirkjubæjarklaustur onward to Skaftafell National Park, one of
Iceland's most outstanding areas of natural beauty, dominated by
Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap. Continue to the Jökulsárlón
Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs float and grind together in the
still, deep waters of the lagoon. Overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur
area.
Day 4:
Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk valley - Strike out along the
Fjallabaksleið interior track to Landmannalaugar, a magnificent area
surrounded by colourful rhyolite mountains, with the option of
bathing in a natural warm pool, a great way to rejuvenate the skin
and the spirit. Spot the towering Hekla, the iconic Icelandic
volcano, after exploring the Þjórsárdalur Valley. Overnight in
Flúðir area.
Note: If the route to Landmannalaugar is closed due to road
conditions (spring or early summer) the tour goes through lava
fields and outwash sands formed by floods from the glacial volcano
Katla to Vík, passing two beautiful waterfalls, and on to Þórsmörk
valley.
Day 5:
Gullfoss - Þingvellir National Park - Reykjavík. Depart for the
Geyser area to see the famous great Geyser and Strokkur, a hot
spring that spouts every few minutes. On to Gullfoss, one of
Iceland's most impressive waterfalls. The next stop is Thingvellir
National Park, where the ancient parliament met for centuries on the
shores of Iceland's largest lake, before heading back to Reykjavik.
