The Zagreb National Theatre is the pride of the city. There you can enjoy Operas, Classical Concerts, Chamber Concerts, Ballet and much more. Zagreb’s theatrical history goes back as far as the 11th century when performances like in many cities at that time in Europe were held in churches. In the more modern era many of the schools and students took the baton and led with Croatian plays and performances, which inspired foreign troops from Germany and Italy to come to Zagreb to perform dramas, musicals, operas and ballets. This trend continues today with several successful musical academies in Zagreb and many schools producing wonderful home grown talent.

In 1846 the first Croatian opera composed by Vatroslav Lisinski was performed, entitled ‘Love and Malice’. The neo-baroque building of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is the centre of culture for Croatia’s Opera and Ballet elite. From the very beginning the repertoire of the Croatian National Theatre was very rich and varied including world classics, traditional pieces and contemporary works. At first it was only created as a drama theatre but the Croatian Parliament by passing the theatre law the following year pronounced it as a National Institution. As a result guests have visited from as far a field as America and the Far East. The Croatian National Theatre has now played host to some of the greatest artists and writers, actors and directors, set and costume designers, world famous opera and ballet principals, conductors and choreographers the world has ever seen and is becoming a world renowned centre for Opera holidays and Ballet Tours of Croatia.
