The roots of opera’s in Lithuania can be traced back to the early 17th century. In 36 years after the genre had originated in Florence, the first opera, Il ratto di Helena, was premiered at the Lithuanian Grand Dukes' Palace Theatre of the Lower Castle in 1636. From the second half of the 18th century to the early 19th century music and the arts, including opera and ballet, were taken under the patronage of influential noblemen, who also held companies in their country mansions and city residencies. Lithuanian National Opera (LNO) and Ballet Theatre, originally was founded in Lithuania's provisional capital, Kaunas, where it resided for over two decades, but eventually found its way back to Vilnius. Today, the LNO and Ballet Theatre has many productions on its repertoire. During the season (September-June) the LNO is usually engaged in around 15 current and 4 new productions. The ballet company has roughly the same number of productions, and usually presents 2 new ones every season. The average number of ballets on current repertoire per month is 15. With the rebirth of Lithuanian independence, the LNO and Ballet theatre has regained all its power for free creative activity and international cooperation. Each new season Vilnius has an interesting and varied programme which combines the well known with the less familiar. The theatre itself is spectacular, a luxurious design, with perfect acoustics.
