What is there to do in Vienna? Quite simply, a lot! Here you’ll
read our recommendations of fun things to try, see and explore. Have
a great holiday in Austria!
Biking in Vienna, the Wachau, and on the
Danube Bike Trail. Planning on visiting Vienna, Austria? Vienna is
ideal for biking. There is a bike path around the “Ring” (the wide
boulevard surrounding the inner city) and most sights are easily
reached by bike. If you have limited time, then you can see more and
save wear and tear on your feet by renting a bike or taking a guided
bike tour. One company that provides both is Pedal Power. Ideally
located near the giant Ferris Wheel and huge Prater Park, with the
Danube just around the corner. With bike rentals, they provide maps
with route suggestions and material explaining the sights you will
see. Or take their daily bike tour (mornings at 10am) and just
follow a professional Austrian guide who will give you insights and
interesting stories about Vienna’s 2000 year old history.
Had enough of cities? Then take a bike ride in
the Wachau or do the Danube Bike Trail. The Wachau is the UNESCO
heritage region along the Danube north of Vienna. Take the train to
Melk, visit the magnificent monastery, ride through the vineyards
(enjoy a glass of wine) to Krems and board the train for the ride
back to Vienna. All doable in a day that you won’t forget!
If you have more time then
consider taking the train to Passau and biking back to Vienna (335
km). Most people take 5 days. This section of the Danube Bike
Trail is probably the best trail in the world taking into
account, scenery, bike paths, ease of finding and comfort of the
places to stay. You just have to visit the information center in the
town where you want to stay and they know where rooms are still
available and what they cost. A trip that you’ll remember!
Take an incredible Boat Tour and capture Vienna from a different
perspective, which couldn’t be possible from anywhere else. We
organise many types of river cruise. From wine & cocktail boat trips
for corporate functions or the stag weekend ‘Vienna fun cruise’.
Seeing the Vienna skyline from the Danube River, will make for an
incredible short weekend experience. We even have excursions that
venture into Bratislava for the day, add this to your enquiry form.
Today, hundreds of balls take place in Vienna during the season
of Fasching, which opens on New Year's Eve and is the last fling
before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Retaining the splendor and
excitement of the age of Strauss, balls usually begin with a lavish
opening ceremony featuring honored dignitaries, costumed dancers,
and handsomely-clad young couples. If you are looking for that
amazingly romantic weekend getaway, then why not attend the
Philharmonikerball or Opera Ball, two of the most distinguished
balls in Vienna.
When flood preventions were put in place along the Danube river,
Danube Island was created and was later developed into a
recreational area. There’s everything here, from canoeing & roller blading to a Caribbean type beach and swimming areas. It’s nothing
short of a recreational mecca, including a plethora of bars, cafes
and late night clubs for stag & hen parties. Danube Island is great
for all types of holiday visitors, whether stag do’s, hen nights,
kids parties or romantic couples, there is something for all tastes.
Vienna is often called the cultural capital of Europe, so it is
of no surprise that a variety of annual festivals run throughout the
year. The best are: International Dance Festival, Opera Film
Festival, Viennale Film Festival, Wien Modern festival, OsterKlang
Festival and the Vienna Festival. We have hotels for all travel life
styles, from Luxury boutiques to quality 3 stars. Book festival,
concert and opera tickets through Vamos Travel. Not forgetting we
are ATOL bonded, so flights can also be purchased through us.
The Vienna Marathon is run in May. Contact Vamos Travel is you
would like us to organise a city break package that is based around
this great annual event.
There are many markets throughout the capital, but none as famous as
the Naschmarkt, which dates back to the 16th century. We would
highly recommend to any discerning traveler to go on a Saturday and
experience Vienna’s largest flee market. It’s a great place to find
those Austrian holiday gifts & souvenirs, to remind yourselves of a
wonderful few days away in Vienna.
Vienna's most loved park is Prater, just north east of the city
centre and has been a public park since 1766, by the order of
Emperor Joseph II. The park has a 3 mile long promenade, called the
Hauptallee, there is a race track and gold course. Maybe an idea for
a corporate day, stag weekends and birthdays. However, the best
attraction to be found in the Prater is the 200ft Grand Ferris wheel
that has 15 cabins to sit comfortably in whilst the great views of
Vienna gently expose themselves. This is a great attraction in
Vienna and we’d advise you to spare some time during your weekend
getaway to ride the old Riesenrad. Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest in the world and is part of the baroque Schönbrunn palace ensemble. The zoo boasts over 700 species ranging
from: pandas, elephants, tigers, lions, birds and aquatic life.
Shopping for some is the highlight of a city break getaway. For
those wanting to exercise those credit cards, Vienna won’t
disappoint you. Head to the Mariahilfer Strasse, one of the hippest
shopping stretches, where you’ll find hundreds of fashion &
jewellery shops. If you like department stores try, Steffl or if you
like to do a little haggling then don’t miss the Naschmarkt flee
market. Other popular shopping streets are: Graben, Kohlmarkt,
Kärntnerstrasse, Ringstrassengalerie. The home of Sigmund Freud for nearly 50 years was converted into a
museum. The house opened to the public in 1971 and there visitors
can discover Freud's collection of antiques, personal belongings and
his original office space. The world-famous Spanish Riding School is one of the most loved
attractions in Vienna and we highly recommend a visit, during a
culture weekend away. The imperial horses perform their intricate
dances in the most beautiful arena and after the show you can visit
the Lipizzaner Museum, to read the history of these elegant horses.
Tickets should be ordered in advance to avoid disappointment. |
