History of Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s history is certainly a full one and as a result those on a short break in Sofia or group tour of Bulgaria will have plenty to experience. The first settlers who inhabited the land were known as the Thracians, mentioned first by Homer. This was in the Bronze Age. The first conquers were the Romans, who governed the entire peninsula and famous residents to the land included Orpheus and the infamous Spartacus. In the second half of the 7th century, the Proto-Bulgarians, an ethnic community of Turkish origin settled on the territory of the present-day in north eastern Bulgaria. In alliance with the Slavs they formed the Bulgarian State, which was recognised by the Byzantine Empire in 681 AD. Khan Asparouh stood at the head of that state and Pliska was made its capital. Bulgaria expanded its empire while under the rule of Khan Tervel (700 – 718 AD). The territory reached from the borders of Carl the Greats lands to the west and as far east as Constantinople. In 864 AD during the rule of Prince Boris I Michail (852-889 AD) the Bulgarians adopted Christianity as their official religion. This act abolished the ethnic differences between Proto-Bulgarians and Slavs and started building a unified Bulgarian nation. After adopting Christianity the influence of the Byzantine Empire grew and Bulgarian church music was created. In the second half of the 9th century the brothers Cyril (Constantine the Philosopher) and Methodius created and disseminated the Cyrillic alphabet. Their disciples Clement and Nahum came to Bulgaria where they were warmly welcomed and found good conditions for work and continued to develop the literary work and Bulgaria’s Cyrillic script. From Bulgaria the Cyrillic script spread to other Slavic lands as well, including present day Serbia and Russia. While on holiday in Bulgaria you should visit the Rila Monastery which holds an even older form of Cyrillic script known as glagoric text. On a short stay in Sofia or a set tour of Bulgaria you can also explore the beautifully decorated Monasteries adorned with hand painted fresco’s from around the same period. The reign of Tsar Simeon I (893-927 AD) marked the "Golden Age of Bulgarian Culture" and the territory of his state stretched to the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. During the reign of Simeon's successors, Bulgaria was weakened by internal struggles and the heresy of the priest Bogomil spread and influenced the teachings of the Cathars and Albigenses in Western Europe. Much later the fierce Turkish tribe called the ‘Bulgars’ crossed the Danube and founded the Bulgarian Empire. The Bulgars reign was dismantled in 1014 by the vicious Byzantine Emperor Basil II. Legend has it that after a decisive victory over the Bulgars, he had the eyes taken out of 15,000 Bulgarian soldiers. By the 14th Century the Turks had seized control of Bulgaria, beginning a five-century Ottoman rule but Bulgarian custom and folklore resided firmly throughout. The Ottoman rule was finally over thrown, when unprecedented brutality on Bulgarian demonstrators outraged European allies, who came to the Bulgarian peoples rescue; Russia ironically being the chief saviour. After World War II Bulgaria was under communist rule until independence was once again achieved in 1989. Now a days Bulgaria is well on its way to democratic reform and city breaks in Sofia and set tours of Bulgaria are continuing to increase in popularity.
