In Bulgaria, you can eat outdoors at least six months of the
year, either in a bustling central street or a quiet courtyard off
street, taking you back a hundred years. The capital is
chock-a-block with restaurants and a new one opens every month.
Aswell as great food Bulgaria contains many excellent wine regions,
which helps make the dining experience in Sofia an extremely
enjoyable event. Some of our favourite places we would recommend you
try when on holiday include:
The Windmill Restaurant is a traditionally themed restaurant with
waiters and waitresses dressed in medieval costume. The food is of
superb fresh quality and is served in wooden and clay dishes. Folk
singers and musicians accompany your meals. It is located in the Vitosha Mountain just outside the city, which means the air is
fantastically clean and the atmosphere warm and relaxing. That is
until you see the famous hot coal walking performances, which have
to be seen to be believed. We would recommend this for discerning
travellers, romantics and group party’s in Sofia alike.
Xotea restaurant is also located on Mount Vitosha. It is an
elegant restaurant with an excellent wine list. The service and
cuisine is of superb standard. It is a little stiff, so probably
best suited for a quiet meal and escaping the hustle and bustle of
the city.
The Majors is a fun restaurant, where you sit around large wooden
tables. The food is excellent and extremely good value for money. It
is also in a good central location in the city centre, quite close
to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. We would recommend this for
younger visitors or stag parties in Sofia.
Rio’s restaurant is another fun restaurant. It is a good choice
for all sorts of fun minded visitors; from sports tours to birthday
celebrations, this place will be sure to put you in the right spirit
before hitting the superb night life scene. Although it has a Latino
theme you can also try a good selection of traditional Bulgarian
dishes here too.
Tambuku is a highly recommended fish restaurant. The fish is
brought in fresh each day and the chef gives you opportunity to pick
which pieces you would like. The open plan environment is quite
quiche and retro and it is a must try for any discerning city break
traveller on holiday in Sofia who enjoys fish dishes.
For Pizza lovers amongst you then check out ‘Background’ pizzeria
in the city centre. It is a cosy place and an ideal retreat from the
shops. Here you can also enjoy happy hour between 3 – 6 pm and wash
your clay oven cooked pizza down with a cool and cheap beer.
Pub Shweik is a fun pub which serves great beer and wholesome
Bulgarian dishes. It is particularly suitable for lads weekend
breaks. In fact a stag night in Sofia should definitely put this
place on its hit list as the drinks are cheap and the staff are
great fun and extremely welcoming. Their motto is “The right place,
for the right people!”
If after a few days on holiday you are missing home cooking then
make your way to Flanagan’s Irish Bar and Restaurant next to the SAS
Radisson Hotel. It’s a huge place that serves British style pub food
to locals and ex-pats alike.
The Irish pub: JJ. Murphy & Co’s is also a popular haunt for UK
city breakers. Again it offers typical International pub food as
well as offering Live Sports. You can often hear familiar songs
coming from this bar be it from a touring rugby team or stagdo.
Another superb Bulgarian folk styled restaurant is ‘Chevermeto’.
Here you can enjoy wonderful meat dishes and of course the lovely
Bulgarian shopska salads. You can also enjoy the live Folklore
shows. If you are on a city break weekend in Sofia or have a special
celebration then the dancers will often ask you to participate in
some of the performances much to the other dinners pleasure. We
would recommend this to anyone wishing to immerse themselves in
Bulgarian culture and cuisine.
The Panorama restaurant on the top floor of the Grand Sofia Hotel
is ideal for those on a luxury short breaks in Sofia or Opera
holidays. Its view over the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is superb as
is the classy service and high quality kitchen.
Beyond the Alley, Behind the Cupboard is the name of a superb art
deco restaurant located on Budapesta Street. It is inside an elegant
art deco building. The minimal style and artistically presented
dishes are first rate and ideal for those on a romantic vacation.
Le Gourmet serves International cuisine of high quality. It is
located on Makedonia Blvd and on the first floor of the building is
a nice French café and on the third floor a live piano bar. A lovely
retreat for any discerning traveller.
The Garden Club is extremely popular in summer due to its lovely
open air terrace. Located on Kniaz Boris street we would recommend
this to those on a romantic getaway. |
