The first day excursion outside Sofia we would recommend is to the Rila Monastery. For more than a thousand years the Monastery has been a treasure store for many of the valuable traditions of Bulgarian Culture, a repository of medieval writings, arts and crafts. It is located in the hills and offers some wonderful views as well as insights to how the monks used to live. A private guide will drive you to the Monastery in approximately 1 hour and on return you can stop for a late lunch at one of the fantastic mountain restaurants. The second excellent day excursion is to the oldest town in Bulgaria: Plovdiv. Plovdiv’s attractions include: the magnificent Ancient Theatre, built by the Romans in the second century AD. Not as far from Sofia is the stunning Vitosha Mountain, which looks over the capital protectively.
