A variety of bird watching holiday tours can be
arranged in Iceland, ranging from a short one day trip to a week
long tour which covers most of the important bird watching
places in the country. Iceland truly is a bird watchers
paradise, with massive colonies and breeding grounds found
throughout the country. Close to Reykjavik is the Reykjanes
peninsula, which is the major nesting grounds for the Arctic
Tern and on the Westman Islands, are the largest Puffin colonies
in Iceland. For those that want to see even more species of
birds, we organise bird watching tours across the central
highlands to Lake Myvatn, which has more species of breeding
ducks than any other place in Europe. Other bird watching
places of great interest in Iceland are Látrabjarg in the West
Fjords, having the largest colony of cliff nesting birds in the
world. In all, 241 kinds of birds are known to have visited
Iceland at one time or another and of these 72 nest regularly.
The most important sea birds are the guillemot, the razorbill,
the puffin, the kittiwake, the fulmar, and the gannet. However,
the most celebrated of all Icelandic birds is the Icelandic
falcon and the snowy owl, which are nearly extinct in the world.

The Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis are one of the
most amazing natural phenomena’s known to man. These bright
flowing green lights of aurora are collisions between
electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the
earth's atmosphere. The Northern Lights are constantly in motion
because of the changing interaction between the solar wind and
the earth's magnetic field, creating a colourful and hypnotic
skyline. Have a holiday in Iceland and discover this natural
phenomenon. “The Northern lights were totally mesmerizing, we couldn’t
believe our eyes……”
(Jane Packard, Oxford)
“They looked like natural fireworks sweeping across the night
sky, truly astounding to see.”
(Elliot Naver, Chiswick)
“The Northern lights are an amazing sight, I felt so lucky to
have witnessed this once in my life, thank you so much for
arranging & suggesting the excursion, it was almost fairy tale
like.”
(Margaret Fairchild, Cirencester)
The northern lights have filled people with wonder,
inspiration and superstition for centuries. Book the Northern
Lights tour and we’ll take you on a mystery-filled tour by super
truck, with an evening full of surprises, away from the city
lights and into the barren landscape in the outskirts of
Reykjavik in search of the sometimes-elusive Aurora Borealis.
*** It’s in important to note that even though Vamos Travel
organises dedicated northern light excursions, it can never be
guaranteed that a clear sighting will be available. All northern
light displays vary in intensity and duration.
