Slovenia’s history is more peaceful and stable than many of it’s neighbouring countries.

The early Slovene settlers came under Germanic rule in 748 and this influence deepened as the Austro-German monarchy took over in the 14th century. As a consequence the upper classes became completely germanised, although the peasants retained their Slovenian identity. After WWI the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dissolved and Slovenia formed a kingdom with the Serbs and Croats. In spring of 1990, Slovenia became the first Yugoslav republic to hold free elections and shortly after this the country voted for and won its independence.
