Slovenia is home to two of the worlds most miraculous natural
creations; the Postojna and Skocjan Caves. Postojna is the second
largest cave system in the world, created over millions of
years, boasting a magnitude of tunnels, galleries and halls. The
20km long underworld system is a miracle in itself, but one becomes
truly astounded at the look of the mysterious human fish (Proteus
Anguinus), wondering at the strange form of life preserved in the
underground kingdom. The cave is accessible without special
equipment and has a constant temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.
Visitors are taken for a tour by a special cave train, accompanied
by experienced guides. A visit takes an hour and a half and the
caves themselves are only 53km from Ljubljana. A few kilometres from
the entrance to Postojna cave stands one of the most picturesque
buildings in the whole of Slovenia. Predjama Castle hangs
dramatically in the middle of a 123 metre cliff and is a four storey
structure almost arrogant in its simplicity, but unconquered and
uncompromising. Although the current building dates from the end of
the 16th century, a castle has stood on this site since the year
1201. Make the Postojna caves part of your amazing Slovenia
holidays.
Book your city break to Ljubljana and discover this
amazing natural phenomenon.
