Auschwitz & Birkenau Tour

For the majority of Jews and prisoners of war, during WWII, their final destination was the premier Nazi death factory in southwestern Poland, the most efficient cog in the wheel of the Nazi’s Endlosung. The chilling final Solution, to the so-called Jewish question, was the violent nightmare of Auschwitz. The town of Oswiecim, later renamed by the Germans as Auschwitz is approximately an 1hr 30 minutes from Krakow and it was here that over 60 years ago, the Nazi’s formed the most horrifying death camp, that was set to eradicate the Polish intellects, prisoners of war and all Jews from across Europe. Over the years it was expanded into three main camps: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II - Birkenau, Auschwitz III - Monowitz and more than 40 smaller satellite camps were built. It is estimated that about 1.5 million people died at the Auschwitz camp, 90% being Jewish.

The Nazi soon developed another larger camp about a mile and a half away from Auschwitz, in a nearby village called Brzezinka, later named Birkenau. The new camp was to hold 100,000 prisoners and people from all across from Europe were brought here and unloaded from the train into the gas chambers. The architects who designed Birkenau built suffering into the plans. Birkenau had no provision for adequate water or waste disposal and putting so many people together meant that the barracks were breeding grounds for disease. It was at this sub camp, where the Nazi’s perfected their technology to carry out industrial mass murder. Although a very disturbing place to visit, the Birkenau - Auschwitz II tour often makes a stronger impression than the original camp, probably due to its vast size and the fact that a lot more of the original buildings are still intact.
