| Hungarian State Opera House |
|
The State Opera House dates from 1884 and was built as a
rival to the opera houses of Paris and Vienna. Its previous musical
directors have included Gustav Mahler, Otto Klemperer and the father
of Hungarian opera, Ferenc Erkel. Among the treasures in the UNESCO
World Heritage site that covers Budapest, the impressive
neo-renaissance building of the State Opera House is one of the most
stand-out buildings to be visited. It was built according to the
designs of Miklos Ybl and has been Hungary’s principle venue for
opera and ballet productions since its resurrection. Don’t miss the
opportunity to watch a performance at the opera house on holiday in
Budapest. Throughout its history the theatre's main consideration
has always been to cultivate the traditions of classical opera &
ballet and enrich them with modern artistic solutions. Together with
Vienna, Budapest is the capital of opera & ballet and visitors can
see for themselves the high standard of shows performed here. The
splendid building of the State Opera Theatre provides an ideal
setting for luxurious entertainment. The main season runs from
September to mid-June and many of the major productions will be
familiar to any opera & ballet enthusiast. We have a dedicated
department that specialises in Opera, ballet, theatre and
luxury hotel breaks.

The other major venue for opera and ballet in Budapest is the
Erkel Színház, which dates back to 1911. The Erkel Színház was
originally built in an Art Nouveau style, but due to many
renovations, it has lost many of its original features. Although,
the state Opera House is the preferred venue for most Budapest
visitors, the Erkel Színház is still an impressive venue, in fact
it’s the largest theatre in Hungary, seating as many as 2,400
people. Its season runs from mid September to the middle of June and
spectators are guaranteed to see a rich variety of works including
the standard repertoire, and also many Hungarian works which are not
heard very often in the UK. Contact our friendly staff about
designing a suitable opera city break package that includes opera
and ballet tickets. We’ll be happy to tailor make a budget break or
luxury Imperial city holiday that coincides with any performance at
the Erkel Színház. Vamos Travel specialises in opera & ballet
performances in Central and Eastern Europe. We look forward
to your enquiry.

The Hungarian’s are extremely proud of their musical heritage,
having produced two of the world’s finest composers, Kodaly and
Bartók. So it is of no surprise that classical music is very popular
and well represented in Budapest. Both, the Hungarian State opera
house & Erkel Theatre present world class concert
performances, but there are many other amazing concert venues to
discover in the city. The imposing concert hall of the Pesti Vigadó
is to this day, one of the most significant venues of music life in
Buda. Ever since it was first opened the Pesti Vigadó has always
been a hub of classical music life where some of the greatest
musicians of the 19th and 20th century have performed. Franz Liszt,
the pianist and conductor, appeared in the Vigadó on several
occasions, even together with Richard Wagner once, in 1875.
Interestingly, between June and August, a whole host of temporary
concert venues spring up, bringing classical music to the masses.
Budapest has one of the most vibrant concert scenes in Europe. Book
in advance your concert tickets for your city break
stay in Budapest, with Vamos Travel. |
