Outside of Bratislava there are some fantastic day trips & fun
excursions to be enjoyed as part of your Slovakia city breaks
holiday. At the union of the rivers Morava and Danube is one of the
most significant archaeological sites in Slovakia, Devin Castle.
There has been settlements here since 5000BC and the castle was
first documented in 864. Although it stood proud for many centuries,
it was badly damged by Napoleonic troops in 1809. Today, the castle
still overlooks the rivers on a rocky outcrop and invites holiday
explorers to climb the hill and witness the magnificent castle top
views. It’s quite simply breath taking. Without a doubt, Devin
Castle is an important national monument and great attraction for
your Bratislava break. However, please note that the castle is open
to the public until October, then closes for the winter period.

Extend your Bratislava weekend break to visit the historic town
of Trencin, just an hours drive north of Bratislava and is guarded
by one of the most extensive Roman castles in Slovakia. Together
with Nitra and Bratislava, Trencin belongs to the oldest Slovak
cities, chronicled in the 11th century. Its strategic location near
three Carpathian mountain passes on the crossroads of commercial
routes, has always determined the character of the city as a
significant city break landmark. If you have enough time in
Slovakia, then Trencin is a great short break diversion from the
Bratislava.
Wine growing in Bratislava is as old as the city itself. The
Celts, the Romans and later the Slavs grew vines on the slopes of
the ‘Little Carpathians’ around the present city and as a result
there are now some wonderful vineyards where wine tasting can easily
be arranged and the local produce can be bought at very cheap
prices. For the wine connoisseurs, Vamos Travel can organise a wine
tour of the local wine producing towns and villages, aswell as
incorporating sight seeing excursions of the best historical sites.
Of special interest is the Burciak Festival marking the grape
harvesting month of September. The festival is jointly hosted by two
towns, held in one or the other in alternate years. Along the road
connecting Pezinok and Modra locals sell two-litre plastic bottles
of Burciak for less than 100 crowns. Make this part of your
wonderful Slovakia holiday experiences your bound to have by
choosing Bratislava as your next short break destination.
The Danubiana - Meulensteen Art Museum is situated on the banks
of the Danube, 15 km away from Bratislava, where it offers its
visitors an opportunity to enjoy the harmony of art and nature that
delights the eye and heart. Many Slovakian’s agree that ‘someone who
has not visited the Danubiana has not really visited Bratislava.’
Although, this view might be a little extreme, we do recommend a
trip to the nearby village of Cunovo, where the museum is located. A
great Slovakia holiday break idea. There is well over 2000 square
metres of exhibition space and a beautiful surrounding park that
displays the best of Slovak and international sculptures. The
Danubiana - Meulensteen Art Museum might not be a priority holiday
attraction, but is worth a visit on a weekend break in Slovakia.
The Little Carpathian sightseeing tour takes you to explore the
surroundings of Bratislava; visiting many quaint Slovak villages and
historic towns. Typical for this region are vineyards on the slopes
of the Little Carpathians. Apart from great wines this area is also
known for beautiful pottery. The highlight of this tour is the visit
of the Kamen Castle (the Red Stone Castle), which ranks among the
best preserved in Slovakia and boasts the largest cellars in central
Europe. During the tour you will visit local pottery (Majolica)
producers and have the opportunity to do some wine tasting.
