Mariinsky Theatre

The most respected theatre in St.Petersburg is the Mariinsky theatre of Opera and Ballet. This world famous building has a subtle yet majestic façade and has comfortable boxes. The theatre, named ‘Mariinsky’ after the Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Alexander II, opened triumphantly in 1860. Opera lovers regard the Mariinsky as being at the forefront of the world's opera companies, thanks largely to the achievements of artistic director Valery Gergiev (who now also masterminds many productions at New York City's Metropolitan Opera). Although the Mariinsky theatre was built as St Petersburg’s premier opera house, its reputation rests largely on the ballet that was added to its repertoire two decades later. The Mariinsky Company, formerly the famous Kirov Ballet Company, nurtured greats such as Nureyev, Pavlova, Baryshnikov, Petipa and countless others. In fact, the choreographer of the Mariinsky during 1880 – 1942 was Michel Fokine, who is widely considered to have been the founder of modern ballet. Fokine’s choreography marked a departure from many of the rigid rules and forms of the earlier tradition and inaugurated the freer styles of expressionism. These names alone are enough to lure ballet lovers to a wonderful evening at the Mariinsky theatre, which seems to improve it self in every new production it hosts. The present day repertoire of the Mariinsky Ballet Company includes, along with Petipa's legacy, Swan Lake, Le Corsaire, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty and ballets staged by George Balanchine and John Neumeier. One can enjoy outstanding classical concerts at the Mariinsky Theatre, from the world renowned Kirov Orchestra that resides at the famed St Petersburg theatre. The orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre enjoys a long and distinguished history as one of the oldest musical institutions in Russia. Founded in the 18th century during the reign of Peter the Great, it was known before the revolution as the Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra. Interestingly, Tchaikovsky was closely associated with the Mariinsky Theatre, not only conducting the orchestra but also premiering his Fifth Symphony.

Vamos Travel will be only too happy to book tickets for future performances, whether; opera, ballet or classical concerts. We can base any type of city break package around scheduled performances. Tickets do sell very quickly, so plan your weekend break in advance to avoid disappointment. We offer the full range of opera & ballet ticket types, from best category to standard.

Mussorgsky Theatre

If tickets for the Mariinsky are unavailable, the Mussorgsky Opera and Ballet Theatre is the next best venue for professional performances. The repertoire of the theatre includes operas, ballets and concerts by Russian and foreign composers performed by masters of the genre. The Mussorgsky Theatre opera has developed into a creative organism with a considerable artistic faculty and has become an intrinsic part of St. Petersburg cultural heritage. It’s an ideal theatre for those on a romantic or luxury holiday break. The Mussorgsky Theatre ballet company was founded in 1933 as contemporary ballet troupe, and since this time the ballet company has brought new names of choreographers & ballet masters to the Russian stage every decade. An atmosphere of artistic studio, where experiments and risk were admitted, promoted it. As ever, the company's main tendency is a quest for new ideas, fresh choreographic imagery and original incarnation of drama on theballet stage. Culturally speaking the Mussorgsky Theatre ballet has become an intellectual revelation in Russia and offers some of the finest experimental dance shows in the world. Classical Concerts are performed by the Mussorgsky Theatre orchestra. They too have an exceptional reputation and tickets for their performances tend to sell extremely quickly.

If you would like to see an opera, ballet or concert at the Mussorgsky Theatre, on a luxury holiday break in St Petersburg, then add this to your enquiry form. Contact the operas abroad specialists:

Classical concerts in St Petersburg

Classical Music is cherished in Russia and there are many popular theatres where one can visit on a city break holiday, to witness fine classical performances. The most prestigious venues include the St Petersburg State Academic Capella, the Shostakovich Philharmonic and the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire. Academic Capella is a concert hall specializing in classical vocal and chamber instrumental music and is one of St. Petersburg's best-kept secrets. The hall possesses excellent acoustic properties, which attracts many connoisseurs. The Capella building has been reconstructed in 1887-1889 by the architect L.N. Benois in the Neoclassical style. It presents not only choral events but also symphonic, instrumental, and vocal concerts. Many famous musicians, including Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov, have performed in this elegant space. The Hermitage theatre is a glorious and highly unusual theatre, which mainly hosts the St. Petersburg Camerata, a rather fine and often overlooked chamber ensemble. There are about 200 concert programmes, including premieres and the theatre's repertoire, every year which always become an important event in the cultural life of St. Petersburg. Many outstanding modern musicians perform on the stage of the Hermitage Theatre. It is also the location for the concerts of the Musical Olympus festival of young laureates of international musical competitions. We’ll be happy to tailor make a short break or luxury holiday break that coincides with classical concert performances or music festival. We look forward to hearing from you.

Two excellent symphony orchestras perform in the Philharmonia's famous, grand concert hall: the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Academic Philharmonic. Both troupes have long, illustrious histories of collaboration with some of Russia's finest composers, and many famous works have premiered in this hall. Of the two, the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, is the oldest Philharmonia in Russia, more than two hundred years old. Its history goes back to 1802 when the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, the first one in Europe, was created. It organized the world premiere of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in 1824. Nowadays the philharmonic concerts are held in two halls. Don’t miss the opportunity of seeing a classical performance in St Petersburg. Incorporate a concert into your luxury city break itinerary and have an evening you’ll never forget.
