The most respected theatre in St.Petersburg is the Mariinsky theatre of Opera and Ballet. This world famous building has a subtle yet majestic façade and has comfortable boxes. The theatre, named ‘Mariinsky’ after the Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Alexander II, opened triumphantly in 1860.
