No city break to St. Petersburg would be complete without a visit
to the beautiful Peterhof Palace. The world-famous palace,
fountain and park ensemble of Peterhof is an outstanding landmark of
Russian artistic culture of the 18-19th centuries. The estate is
situated approximately 20 miles west of St Petersburg, on the Baltic
Sea coast and one of the best ways to arrive there is by hydrofoil,
which only takes 50 minutes. Peterhof is an immensely luxurious
royal estate, often referred too as the ‘Russian Versailles’ or the
‘capital of Russian fountains’. Weekend breaks explorers will
discover over a 170 fountains of various forms, exquisite pavilions,
ornate statues of ancient gods and picturesque palaces that house
remarkable collections of art. The Grand palace is a
fabulously ornate structure built to rival the Palace of Versailles
and was founded by Peter the Great and later remodeled by Bartolomeo
Rastrelli. Visitors can take a guided tour of the interior of the
palace or simply spend the day strolling through the formal gardens.
Of all the fountains and water features, one to take note of is the
Grand Cascade, which goes downhill from the palace towards the
Baltic Sea and is one of the largest fountain ensembles in the
world. Once visiting Peterhof, one realizes that the fountains are
not mere accessories, they are the essence of the place. Truly,
Peterhof is an artistic miracle, unique in the world and must be a
priority on a St. Petersburg luxury break. Important to note,
Peterhof is open 10-5pm, the Grand Palace is closed on Mondays and
the fountains work from May to early October. Also, close to the
park and palaces, lies the town Peterhof, which is famous for Raketa
wrist-watches. Contact us today about adding Peterhof to your

In summer, a lovely way to spend a day is to visit the
Kirovsky Islands: Kamenny, Yelagin and Krestovsky. Many Russian
locals, expats and tourists come here to escape city life of St
Petersburg and spend the entire day boating along canals, picnics in
the park and walking along nature trails. Originally these Islands
were a popular playground for the Russian high society, so not only
are there parks to discover but one can find beautiful palaces
aswell. One palace of particular interest is the imperial Yelagin
Palace, which used to be a popular summer residence for many Royal
families. Kirovsky Islands are extremely beautiful and offer a great
day excursion, especially if you are looking for post card perfect
scenery.
An excellent half day excursion during a luxury city break would
be to another of St. Petersburg's historical estates called
Pavlovsk, just 29km south of the city centre. Pavlovsk was built
for Russian Tsar Paul I, to the designs of the famous Scottish
architect, Charles Cameron and is in close proximity to the
Tsarskoye Selo estate. Pavlovsk has a dual look and feel, which
reflects the different outlook and tastes of its owners, Paul and
his wife Maria. Paul’s hand can be seen in prominent militaristic
motifs throughout many of the state rooms, while elsewhere one can
see the exquisite and refined tastes of his wife at work.
Undoubtedly, this makes for exploring the palace a lot more
interesting and diverse. The focal point of the Pavlovsk Estate is
the Grand Palace, which is designed like an Italian Villa. The
interior reveals a multitude of artistic and architectural
influences and are a joy to explore, but so are the incredible
gardens which are surrounded by acres of densely forested parkland.
Although smaller than other estates like the Tsarskoye Selo and
Peterhof, it is a worthy city break excursion and you’ll find it a
refreshing break from the bustle of St Petersburg. Many hours can be
enjoyed looking around the stately rooms or meandering around the
charming gardens. Pavlovsk is a beautiful place to enjoy on a
holiday break in Russia.
Located 25km south of St Petersburg is the Tsar’s village,
translated in Russian as Tsarskoye Selo. This is one of
Russia’s finest Imperial estates and an excellent idea for a half
day excursion outside of St Petersburg. Tsarskoye Selo estate was a
popular country retreat for Russian nobility in the 18th & 19th
century and it was especially loved by Catherine I, who was given
Tsarskoye Selo as a present from her husband, Peter the Great in
1708. Apart from the beautifully groomed gardens & landscape to
explore, the biggest weekend break attractions are the two palaces
in the Tsarskoye Selo Estate. Taking centre stage is the wonderful
gold, white and blue baroque-styled Catherine Palace, which was
completed by Rastrelli and the other major landmark is the
neo-classical Alexander Palace. Both buildings can be explored,
where city break guests can marvel upon luxurious halls, intricate
interiors and famous spaces like the ‘mirrored ballroom’ and the
priceless ‘Amber room’. Also to be found on the estate is the well
preserved Lyceum, a type of boarding school to educate the Russian
elite. Aleksandr Pushkin, the famous russian poet, was one of
the famous students who attended this college in 1811–1817. Inside
the Lyceum, visitors can view the original classrooms, dorms and
school library. The Tsarskoye Selo estate offers a fantastic
experience during a luxury holiday of St Petersburg. If you have the
time, then make it a priority visit during your stay in Russia.
Vyborg is found on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, 120km
north east of St. Petersburg and is known as one of the largest
historical towns in Russia. Its history began with the construction
of a castle in 1293, built by the Swedes, on a small Island off the
Baltic coastline. The castle & town of Vyborg was a major strong
hold for the Swedish, who were able to control the trade routes
going to Russia. Russian armies failed on numerous occasions to
penetrate the towns fortified construction, which still to this
today retains its medieval character. Eventually, after persistent
bombardments, the Russian’s finally got the Swedes to surrender and
after the reconstruction and further fortifications of the castle,
Vyborg maintained military significance till the early 19th century.
Whilst visiting Vyborg, you will discover the ‘Round Tower’
nicknamed the Fat Catherine on the market square of the old town,
this along with the Monrepo estate, are some of the major
attractions of Vyborg. Vyborg presents an amazing journey out of St
Petersburg, where you’ll discover a place of unforgettable style and
be calmed by the quiet of the historical monuments and streets.
Vyborg is a carefully preserved historical town that is one of the
finest city break excursions one could wish for. |
