Whilst on your city break holiday in Reykjavik, we highly recommend
an evening to witness one of Reykjavik’s Opera productions,
ballet performances or classical concerts. Almost every evening the
curtains rise to transfer the spectators to the surprising world
created on the stage by talents of the performers, composer and
conductor. Whatever performance you see in Reykjavik’s wonderful
theatres, you will feel from the stage a power of talents,
inspiration, skill and fidelity to the art.

Iceland has its own opera company performing in the smallest and
northern most Operatic House in the world. The opera company
is located in an elegant old cinema house in the heart of Reykjavik,
called Garmia Bió, which only seats 473 people. The Icelandic Opera
is certainly young in comparison to its fellow European opera
houses, as its roots only date back two decades. The Iceland Opera
was first founded by a group of singers at the instigation of Garðar
Cortes in 1978, performing Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci in Háskólabíó
in March 1979. The company soon found base in an old cinema and
performed its first production in 1982 of Johann Strauss’s Gypsy
Baron. Since then, the company has staged over 40 operas and has had
over a 100 Icelandic and more than 20 foreign singers involved in
their performances. To date, over 350,000 guests have attended
performances at the Iceland Opera house. During the winter,
the Icelandic opera performs lunch operas on Tuesday at 12.15pm. One
of the best sopranos in the country, Signy Saemundsdottir, often
sings at these events. The Iceland Opera is a major cultural
landmark in Reykjavik and we highly recommend to our city breaks
clients, to consider booking opera tickets, to coincide with a
holiday stay here. Tickets do sell very quickly, so plan your short
breaks in advance to avoid disappointment.
The Iceland Dance Company is an independent public institution in
residence at the City Theatre in Reykjavík, one of Europe's finest
theatres for dance & ballet. The National Theatre of Iceland founded
the company in 1973 and is responsible for developing, creating and
nurturing contemporary dance and Icelandic choreography. Today, the
company consists of nine to fourteen dancers, all sharing a
background in classical training but retaining a pronounced
individuality. The Iceland dance group has emerged as an exciting
and critically acclaimed contemporary dance company in Europe.

| Classical Concerts in Iceland |
|
The Iceland Symphony Orchestra was formally established in
1950, with much support from the Reykjavik College of Music and the
Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. Already, in such a short
space of time, the ISO has reached high levels of artistry. It
approximately performs sixty concerts each season, including
subscription concerts in Reykjavik and tours both in Iceland and
abroad. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra’s annual programme runs from
September to June, with an ambitious series of concerts, covering a
huge range of classical music, from well-loved classics to
contemporary compositions. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra usually
performs every Thursday at 19.30pm. Incorporate a classical
concert into your luxury city break itinerary of
Iceland and have an evening you’ll never forget. |
