The city centre and suburb districts boast a wide variety of
different restaurants, whose culinary styles include traditional
Slovenian and numerous other national cuisines. One of Ljubljana's
specialities is that also numerous high-end restaurants offer a
selection of special lunchtime menus at favourable prices. The
capital lies at the intersection of four different Slovenian
regions, so a large number of the city's restaurants offer culinary
specialities and a wide selection of high-quality wines from around
Slovenia.

Dining in Ljubljana is an absolute delight, especially
along the river at night, when the restaurants fairy lights
illuminate the river. The old town is built up of bustling
restaurants and picturesque café’s with outdoor seating and
umbrellas over head making it a lovely city to dine during a short
break getaway in Slovenia.
We only review the restaurants that our
staff or our clients have visited & recommended. So let us be your
food guide to Ljubljana holidays and use our positive experiences to
enhance your dining enjoyment.
Gostilna As restaurant typifies the perception of ‘fine service’.
The waiters will not only help you with your selections but they
will even cut your meat for you. The atmosphere is classy but not
stifled and the live piano music just adds to the already impressive
ambience. The prices for the quality of food and service are
excellent value. We recommend this for discerning travellers on a
romantic holiday and for anyone who enjoys good service and value.
It is also walking distance to the main Theatres and
Opera houses,
so it is also a good choice for those on an Opera holiday in
Slovenia. Arguably the city's best restaurant, Gostilna As, is
wonderful, a top table in Ljubljana. Pri Sv Florijanu is another
fine dining choice for your weekends stay. Not the place for budget
short break travelers but perfect for people that don’t mind paying
for quality. It’s one of Ljubljana’s oldest restaurants that serves
Slovenianm and French cuisine. Downstairs they serve a Moroccan menu
in suitably Arabic surroundings. The Moroccan restaurant is called
Moro and is very good and cheaper to upstairs. The Clientele of Moro
ranges from expats, tourists and Slovenia stag weekends.
Rotovz is on one of the main streets in the centre, near the town
hall and is a classically styled restaurant. It serves mainly
Italian and some International dishes. The décor is opulent the
service is impeccable and the standard of food is high. We would
recommend this restaurant for those on a romantic break in
Ljubljana. Also excellent for top cuisine, is Chez Eric. This classy
restaurant serves French cuisine and is the best French
establishment in the city. What more can we say, except, go and dine
for your selves. One of the most up-market places to eat is at the
Grand Hotel Union. There restaurant ‘Smrekarjev Hram’ is highly
regarded in the gourmet scene and we definitely think it deserves
our acknowledgement as a top table to try. It’s a firm favourite
with theatre goers, opera lovers, businessmen and high society. The
food is impeccable, the service is unquestionably great and the
atmosphere is very pleasant.
If you are staying for an extended holiday in Slovenia as opposed to
a short break in Ljubljana then you may wish to venture outside the
capital. Just a short distance outside of the capital, you can reach
the Pri Poku restaurant and inn. As well as being a charming place
to stay in Slovenia’s rural countryside it is also an excellent
place to dine during your Slovenian holiday. Its gourmet food is of
the highest standard as are the waiters and waitresses and its
extensive wine cellar offers more than 400 varieties of wine. Wine
tasting evenings can be arranged on request and are lead by Pri
Pokus two long standing sommeliers. The restaurant also boasts
wonderful home made ice cream and exceptional prosciutto and
pancetta ham.
City breaks here are not complete without a visit to Sokol
restaurant. Sokol is almost a dining institution and is a fun place
to eat. It is designed in authentic settings, with a fabulous open
kitchen with a huge clay oven. The speciality dishes are incredible
and the portions are enormous. The service is excellent and it makes
for a memorable night out. It is particularly good for a hearty
lunch or for a special group meal. Birthday parties and stag
weekends in Ljubljana are welcome here. We are always happy to make
reservations for Vamos Travel city break clients. Ljubljanski Dvor
is an excellent pizzeria with an enviable position overlooking the
Lublijanica River. The summer terrace makes it an ideal place for
lunch during a days exploring or shopping. This restaurant caters
for all sorts: couples, groups and sports tours, even
stag weekends in Ljubljana. Pivnica
Kratchowill is a microbrewery serving good food. The interior is
modern and the food is mainly Czech influenced with beer sausage,
sauerkraut and game dishes top of the list. It is located near the
train station on Kolodvorska 14. We would recommend this for a fun
hearty meal, probably ideal for activity groups or Slovenia stag
do’s. Spajza is a lovely restaurant, designed in a bohemian style with
candlelit rooms. The menu has a mixture of local specialties like Krasi prsut (Karst air dried ham) and scampi tails, as well as a
nice selection of tasty salads. They also do an excellent tiramisu.
Spajza is definitely the ultimate romantic rendez-vous, wher you
won’t have to be worried about sitting next to a load of noisy stags
& lads. Spazja is another contemporary restaurant, which takes on
tradition and will have you toasting Slovenia’s culinary heritage.
Our top tip is the Seabass. Spajza is a Ljubljana short break
must-dine, don’t miss it. On the Seafood tip, we also suggest Zlata
Ribica restaurant on the banks of the Ljubljanica in the Old Town.
The best time to go is after a visit to the flea market on Sunday
mornings. The bar / bistro soon fills with all sorts of characters,
which creates a bustling and fun environment to enjoy. The locals
tend to go for fried calamari and drink white wine spritzers; so
when in Rome. Another quality riverside brasserie to try is Pri
Vitezu, again the Seafood dishes are very good. Gostilna pri Katrci is an Inn, Pub and Pizzeria in one. It serves
wonderful hearty dishes and is well renowned for its home made
soups, clay oven cooked pizza and excellent steaks. It’s relaxed
vibe, quality food and good value attracts a variety of dinners.
Romantic couples, opera lovers all share this venue in harmony. Pri
sv. Florijanu is a romantic break restaurant on the way up to the
castle. It offers imaginative Slovenian dishes with a French
influence. The chef has a superb restaurant and is well respected by
the local Slovenian dinners. Dishes tend to range from porcini
mushroom risotto and pumpkin ravioli to asparagus soup and motovilec
salad.
In short other top city break tables to try on your Ljubljana
holidays and opera breaks are Pen Club, Pri Sv Florijanu, Meson Don
Felipe and Meson Don Felipe. We have rewarded ourselves many a time
in these establishments.
There are many fantastic Slovenia skiing winter break resorts.
One of our favourites is

hotels & restaurants on top of the mountain resort. Being the
