The exclusion zone around the old town of the infamous Chernobyl,
has become a tourist attraction and offers to be an insightful full
day excursion. Although, visiting the dead zone site of the world's
worst nuclear disaster, is probably the last place on Earth to which
a sane person would choose to go on a city break, scientists claim,
a visit to Chernobyl presents no more dangers than flying by
aircraft. During the day excursion, small ghost towns will be
visited and finally ending up in the old settlement of Chernobyl.
Although this 30km zone is still controlled by authorities, the area
is completely safe and much of the wildlife in the forests are
thriving, enjoying life without human contact & pollution. In the
absence of people, the streets and countryside around are completely
free of litter and the air is crystal clean, which makes for a nice
change from the bustle of Kiev city life. The Chernobyl tour is
informative, heart breaking but never the less and an amazing
experience. If you have participated in tours such as Auschwitz and Birkenau in
Krakow, then maybe you should consider seeing Chernobyl
and over abandoned towns. Who else can say they’ve been to Chernobyl
on a Kiev weekend city break holiday? Not many, that’s for sure!On the southwestern outskirts of Kiev is the open air
folklore
museum. In this huge space, there are well over 40,000 ethnographic
exhibits, including folk costumes, musical instruments, paintings,
tools, household articles etc. All these objects are exhibited both
inside the cottages and other farm buildings that have been moved
here from various regions of Ukraine. It’s a fabulous place to
explore and learn about old rural life in the Ukraine. We’d
recommend this amazing folklore museum to all discerning travellers
on holidays to Ukraine.
Tucked away and almost hidden from the busy and not too distant Lesi
Ukrayinky Boulevard, lay the remains of an almost forgotten Kiev
fortress, built as part of a massive fortification system protecting
Kyiv from invaders, that launched their attacks from the Dnieper
river. Today, the Kyiv fortress, situated on the western tip of Pechersk Hill, is a quiet short break getaway excursion from the
busy streets of the city centre. It is from here you’ll find some of
the best natural panoramic views of Kyiv and take some wonderful
sunset pictures. It’s a great place to escape the city buzz and to
experience a different side to Kiev, whilst on a weekend breaks
there.
Shopping in Kiev is always rewarding as a cross-cultural experience
and adds a pleasant dimension to a Ukraine city break. There is a
smart new underground shopping mall, as well as the more traditional
markets available for those who enjoy haggling. Flea markets dot the
city, with treasures waiting to be found and are extremely good
value and entertaining. The black market is an excellent bazaar made
up of a network of small covered alleys. You can find anything here
from Rye bread, to Kiev night’s chocolates through to the more
famous Vodkas. The Metrograd Shopping Complex stretches from Lva
Tolstoho square to Khreshatyk with many turns and corridors. You can
shop for clothes, shoes, furniture, toiletries, books, souvenirs and
there are pharmacies, wrapping services, sun beds and much more.
Flea markets are an exciting part of any short break in Europe.
Where one can escape the tourist traps and mingle with the locals.
Another great idea when you can't walk anymore is to take a
sightseeing boat. On board you can put your feet up, absorb the
views and order drinks. This is a most enjoyable tour and gives you
time to relax but yet see the sights on your city break of Kiev.
If you want to get away from the hustle of the city and relax,
then we suggest, you take the metro across the Dnipro and take a
stroll along the beaches or rest up in the numerous green parks. Try
Shevchenko park (near metro Universitet) this is where the local
people hang out, play chess, sometimes play music, and take away
pancakes & beer.
For birthday weekends, stag parties, hen do’s, we do a fantastic
range of fun activities in Kiev, from go-karting and paintballing to
hardcore shooting and pub crawls. If any of these stag do type
activities interest you, then contact the stag party department at
Vamos travel. Take a peaceful stroll in the central Park of Culture and Rest, one
of Kiev’s most popular recreational parks and enjoy a moment of
quieter reflection, away from the hustle of the city. Also, located
in the park is the Dynamo Stadium, home to Kyiv’s ‘Dynamo FC’. Why
not pre-book tickets and watch a football match and in one of the
most electrifying stadium atmospheres. Football tickets make perfect
birthday gifts, great for lads holidays, cheap Kiev stag weekends
packages and corporate days out. Hydro park offers many beaches, bars and many different beer
gardens. About ten minutes walk from the metro stop there is a tiny
amusement park. The Kiev Hydro Park is a great idea for the summer,
a perfect little diversion from the city centre. The beaches are fun
for the family and the bars are great for Eastern Europe hen & stag
partys. |
