One of the most beautiful places of interest in Dubrovnik’s Old
Town is the Rectors Palace. It has been damaged several times by gun
powder and even by an earthquake tremor but it has been
painstakingly restored to its former beauty. Here you can also enjoy
open air concerts during the summer months; something we highly
recommend experiencing.
The outer rampart walls protecting the Harbour are a must do
tourist attraction. It will take a good hour to complete the circuit
and you will need to be a capable walker to negotiate the steps. It
is great fun to walk around during the weekend break and from the
walls you are able to appreciate just how magical Dubrovnik’s old
town is. In the summer months walking the rampart walls is hot work
but there are a few spots where you can stop and buy water and
admire the view out into the Adriatic. There are many forts to
explore along the wall including Fort Bokar, St. Johns Fort and Fort
Minceta. The Fort of St.Lawrence is also worth seeing and from the
towers you can gain some lovely views of the Old Town and Lokrum
Island (Love Island). Croatian guests can hire hand held guides in
different languages to accompany them while around the walls.
There are numerous superb museums to explore, the most
fascinating of which is the Maritime museum located on the outer
walls themselves. Holiday makers can also enjoy Dubrovnik’s
excellent Art Gallery, which houses a plethora of pieces including
many Italian Masters. There are also a number of gallery’s to enjoy
sprinkled all over the stunning Old Town.
After you have exhausted yourself in the Old Town we would
recommend a day trip out with one of the Captains from the harbour.
Even if you are on a city break in Dubrovnik you should make time
for this as the surrounding Islands offer so much beauty, excitement
and romance. Many of the trips include a fresh fish picnic, which
adds to the pleasure of the trips.
The main Islands to explore are Lokrum, Mljet and the Elafiti or
Renaisance Islands. Many are national parks and offer wonderful
nature spots for you to explore on your holidays.
Lokrum is the closest island and is known as the island of Love.
It is a gorgeous little island, which you can spend an entire day
exploring while on a super break in Croatia. In the centre is a
small lake for swimmers and sun revelers to enjoy and the periphery
is covered in rocky enclaves for sunbathing, swimming and exploring.
In the middle of the island is a fortress and church where weddings
and other special celebrations can be arranged; and surrounding the
fortress are lovely Roman gardens. If you walk to the pinnacle of
the island you can over look Dubrovnik from a small fort.
Another extremely popular day trip is to the Elafiti islands of:
Šipan, Lopud and Koločep. It is a fascinating day trip which gives
you a great insight into island life in Dalmatia. During the day you
will have chance to explore a church tower on Sipan, take a swim on
Lopud and wander the pier at Kolocep. You will also have a fish
picnic, with wine, which adds to the fun of the day. We would
recommend this for anyone staying for a week or more during their
summer vacation in Croatia.
The one place we highly recommend experiencing during a holiday
to Dubrovnik or Korcula is the island called Mljet. Mljet is a
nature reserve, protected because of its unique natural beauty and
wildlife. Mjet offers two land locked Lakes surrounded by hills
covered in lush vegetation. During a day trip your guide will take
you on a boat to an island in the middle of the biggest lake where
you can take some lunch and explore the Benadictine Monastery. You
can then take a hike with the guide up one of the hills and enjoy
the stunning panorama. It is amazing to see the land locked Lakes
contained within the Adriatic and is a must for any discerning
Dubrovnik city break Traveller or Korcula holiday maker.
Korcula is a holiday unto itself but it is also ideal to
experience as a combination holiday with other Croatian cities &
towns. Korcula is described as a ‘mini Dubrovnik’, which has a
lovely air about it – maybe because of its romantic ties with Marko
Polo. Here you can enjoy lovely cafes, restaurants, wonderful and
swimming and snorkeling conditions. It is ideal for romantic
holidays in Croatia.
From Korcula we can also recommend and organize a number of
fascinating and memorable day trips, such as to the local village of
Zrnovo or to the central town of Blato, which offers a small locally
run museum with a beautiful collection of agriculture tools,
pictures and handicrafts from the area. We can also arrange for a
stop at a local vineyard for a spot of wine-tasting.
The near by town of Cavtat only a 20 minute bus or ferry ride
away is another place of beauty and interest. It is a smaller
version of Dubrovnik but is equally enjoyable to explore. For
travelers looking for a quiet and relaxing break then Cavtat is a
great choice.
Dubrovnik is also famous for its superb folk singing festivals as
well as numerous outdoor classical concerts, operas and ballet for

The Archaeology museum is a fascinating spot and includes a
number of exhibitions including a collection from the Earth Quake of
1667. This collection includes many sculptures, different vessels
and metal artefacts found at archaeological excavations, which
preceded reconstruction of the old urban centre of Dubrovnick.
The Rectors Palace is a beautiful building to explore. Although
damaged several times it has been restored superbly and offers a
number of wonderful collections including Ceramics, Metal Work,
Textiles and more. The rooms are renaissance and baroque influenced
and the courtyard offers some wonderful sculptures to enjoy. In
summer you can enjoy open air concerts here.
Of course the most influential trade in and around the city has
been from the sea. Be it from ship building to merchant trading. The
Maritime Museum is located in St.John’s Fort, which was re-built
after the earth quake in 1979. The permanent display was opened in
1986 and consists of 4,000 exhibits owned by the Museum, which
illustrate the naval history of Dubrovnik and the surrounding
region. Among the exhibits are ship models dating back to the 17th,
18th and 19th centuries, as well as flags, cannons and other
weapons, figureheads, nautical instruments, log books, various
documents, and the like. The Museum holds a valuable library
containing many rare books and important archival materials, which
are fascinating to see during a weekend break in Dubrovnik.
The Marin Drzic Museum is a unique creation. The museum is made
in honour of Croatia’s most famous play write and gives a glimpse at
his life and history. It is also used for other exhibitions and is
therefore a particularly interactive venue. For fans of Marin then
this is a must see place during your city break in Dubrovnik.
The Modern History Museum in Dubrovnik takes a look at the more
recent Homeland war with Serbia and is a stark reminder of those
devastating and sad times.
Finally the Ethnographic Museum in Dubrovnik takes you back in
time again and exhibits over 5,000 original pieces. There is a great
section illustrating the folk customs, costumes and way of life in
and around Dubrovnik. For discerning city break travellers wanting
to learn more about their Dalmatian hosts ancestry this is the place
