Hardly one hour from Dubrovnik, the Montenegro Littoral provides
incomparable natural beauties and an abundance of historical cities.
Our drive takes us to the mouth of the Bay of Kotor and along the
curving roadway through the towns of Risan and Perast to Kotor. Here
we will stop to capture forever on film one of the most beautiful
parts of the bay, and learn some of the compelling history of this
area. Our descent from the heights will take us to Cetinje, the
one-time seat of Montenegran rulers, today a city-museum. After
sightseeing in Cetinje we return to the coast with a short stop
above Sveti Stefan and Budva. Our return drive to Dubrovnik will be
pleasantly shortened by a ferry ride across the Bay.

This area has seen varied cultures and religions over the centuries,
each of them leaving their traces which this tour will show to you.
We drive along the coast to the town of Neum, then inland through
the karst and mountainous areas of Hercegovina. A short stop above
the Deransko Lake will be followed by a drive along the Neretva
River valley to Mostar. During the Turkish rule the city was an
important trade centre and the guided tour will show you the city's
highlights, such as the Bazaar, the Mosque and a typical Turkish
house. Our return drive takes us to Počitelj – a picturesque
fortress town rich in oriental architecture.

Excursion ideas: Blend discovery with recreation
If you are staying in the Dubrovnik region for a week or more and
are interested in exploring areas of Dalmatia off the beaten track
then Vamos Travel also offers a number of hand crafted hiking tour
programmes into the near by countryside staying in rustic style
accommodation. The base for these excursions is on the gorgeous
island of Korcula and the trips are designed for travelers looking
to combine a perfect blend of discovery and recreation during their
holiday in Croatia.
The Dalmatian island of Korcula offers a possibility for you to
spend a week or so hiking on paths through old charming villages,
vineyards, olive tree fields, pine and cypress woods. We do not make
hiking on asphalt roads. Our experienced guides will tell different
stories about the history and the way of life on the island and take
you to some of the most beautiful areas of the island and the
surrounding islands. They can also explain the way of making wine
and oil and the hard work of stone cutting and ship building which
are long traditions on the island of Korcula.
Our groups of hikers are accommodated in charming private houses
in the village of Zrnovo from May through to September. These houses
were built in the 18th and 19th century in solid stone and in a
local style. They are big enough to accommodate 2 to 4 persons in 1
or 2 rooms sharing one bathroom. The owner (somebody in the house
always speaks English) will serve breakfast and give a superb packed
lunch picnic. In the evenings groups can enjoy dining together in a
local inn or restaurant. The healthy food comes from the gardens of
the village and a glass of good local wine is served with each meal.
We can also tailor Croatia hiking tours for couples or individuals.
Some of the main places of interest include the charming little
St.Anton’s Chapel, which is located on a hill outside Korcula and
offers panoramic views. From here we recommend to take a boat to the
tiny island of Stupa where you can enjoy a fish picnic and swimming
in the gorgeous clean sea only a few metres from a local restaurant.
From here you can visit Badija island which holds a fabulous old
Franciscan Monastery. The third island in this area is Vrnik, where
you can visit old stone quarries dating from Roman times. It is a
superb trip to experience during a hiking tour in Croatia.
Other places of note worth hiking to when on holiday in Dubrovnik
are the village of Pupnat and the Kocje Nature Reserve. You reach
Pupnat by an old Napoleon road. We would also recommend visiting
Jakasova cave and the isolated beach of Rasohatica, which are both
wonderful and unique attractions to experience on during your
Croatia holiday. On this part of the hiking tour in Korcula lunch is
served on the terrace of a lovely restaurant and afterwards we hike
the hill of Zukova Njiva (Alt. 308 metres) to enjoy the beautiful
panorama of the east part of the island of Korcula. Here you can
look out into the Adriatic sea and see the paradise island of Mljet.
Then we climb down to visit the Jakasova cave (about 100 meters
long) and enjoy it’s fascinating underground world before continuing
to the small beach on Rasohatica where you can take time to relax
and swim.
The National Park of the Island of Mljet can also be visited on a
walking holiday in Croatia. Again you can enjoy lunch on a lively
terrace restaurant before entering the beautifully preserved pine
tree woods or we can organize pack lunches for you to feast from at
the top of one of the fabulous view points. From the view point you
will also come see the two sea locked lakes and can view the rich
vegetation all around. After about 1 hour walking by the south side
of the lakes you will come across a small island with an old
Benedictine Monastery in the middle. A boat will come to bring us on
to the small island (about 5 minutes) and you can enjoy a guided
tour of the Monastery (built in 12th century, finally closed by
Napoleon's Army in 1807). It is an amazing attraction that any
visitor should not miss when on holiday in the Dubrovnik and Korcula
area.
As well as trekking and exploring you can also try your hand at Sea
Kayaking, Horse Back Riding, Rafting and Mountain Biking. For
fishing fanatics then sea fishing can also be arranged. |
