For nature lovers this is definitely a “must see” location in
Iceland. You will see and experience wonderful scenery and sail on
the amazing Breiðafjörður bay. A net-plough is cast overboard and
the seabed trawled for shellfish delicacies to taste. It doesn’t
come any fresher or tastier than this.

The sailing boat Haukur offers a
unique opportunity to experience the spirit of time past. The
boat heads first for Lundey (Puffin Island) one of Iceland’s
largest puffin colonies. Then, weather permitting, we cut the
engines, up the sails and go off looking for whales the
traditional way. An excellent adventure tour that combines whale
watching, bird watching and sailing on Iceland’s only schooner.
Haukur was built in Reykjavík in 1973 and was one of two very
special boats constructed in the shipyard “John at Eleven”. For
many years the boat fished from the Western Fjords of Iceland.
It begun its whale-watching career in the summer of 1997. After
five productive summers the boat was taken into dry dock in
Húsavík and converted into a two mast sailing ship, similar to
the fishing schooners which were common on the northern coasts
of Iceland in the late 19th century.

Breiðafjörður bay is known for its
stunning beauty with the perfect frame of mountains high and
low, highlighting the scenery.
On the southern islands of Breiðafjörður bay is a fantastic
variety of bird life, including puffins, eider ducks,
kittiwakes, fulmars, cormorants and the white-tailed eagle. A
high point of the boat tour is when a net is hauled in and
everyone can taste the shellfish and sea-urchin roe (caviar). En
route; an unforgettable stop at Bjarnarhöfn, where the old
national delicacy “cured shark” is prepared for consumption.
Also visited is the new Settlement center, highlighting how the
Icelandic nation was formed and how it survived, on this
deserted island in the North Atlantic Ocean. |

West Fjords largest town is
Isafjordur. The town centre is interesting to walk around as
there are old streets and houses that have no similarity in the
whole country. A morning stroll around town is in this
combination tour is followed by our most famous boat tour to the
bird Island Vigur.
After taking the fly bus to town, walk around the town with a
local guide. After a brake for lunch e.g. fresh fish,(not
included) we'll board a boat for Vigur Island, where we´ll be
taken on a walking tour introducing us to the nature and history
of the area.
Before returning to the mainland we'll be treated to traditional
homemade cakes and coffee. We'll also have a chance to visit the
Europe's smallest post office - maybe you'll want to send a card
or two back home.

More than 40 km north of the
mainland lies the island of Grímsey, 5.3 km 2 in area, green and
grassy on the top, but its sides mainly sheer cliff faces. Its
north part is crossed by the Arctic Circle, the only point of
Iceland that lies in the Arctic.
People often visit this northernmost Icelandic community in
order to set foot across the Arctic Circle - indeed all our
passengers receive a certificate to prove that they have done
so.
In good weather, you will enjoy a grand view of the rugged
mountains on both sides of Eyjafjörður on your way to Grímsey. |
