golden circle tour

Encounter a cross-section of Iceland’s natural wonders, geology and history, making numerous stops along the way.

First stop is at the world-famous Geyser area, a geothermal field where hot springs are in abundance, geysers explode and pools of mud bubble. Spend some time walking around in this area and visit the Geyser museum that is included as a main feature of this area. This is an informative multimedia exhibition that vividly shows how the forces of nature shaped the country and the people. One of many highlights of the tour is the volcanic crater, Kerið, and another is the Gullfoss waterfall, the queen of Iceland's waterfalls, tumbling down a deep gorge. Finally, but no less spectacular is a visit to the Þingvellir National Park, the very place where the first settlers held their annual parliamentary assembly and where the earth is ever so slowly pulling Iceland apart along tectonic plates.

Ice & Fire - Glaciers and Volcanoes Book with Confidence

This is a magnificent tour over the Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers. Between the ice and snowfields we visit Hekla, the most famous of Iceland's volcanoes, which last erupted in 2000.

On Heimaey Island in the Westmann Islands there's still clear evidence of the famous destruction to the island and its town caused by an eruption in 1973. A new island, Surtsey rose out of the sea a little further to the south in an eruption that started in 1963.

Other places of interest on route include Thingvellir, site of the world's oldest parliament, the Gullfoss golden waterfall, and Geyser – one of the world's outstanding geothermal areas and the origin of the English word "geyser".
