About
Poprad & Spiská Sobota
A ten
minute walk west from AquaCity will bring you into the heart of
Poprad. This bustling town of 55,000 people is the
gateway to the High Tatras and is well supplied with everything
even the most demanding of tourists could want. There are lots
of bars, cafés and restaurants as well as shops and small,
quaint kiosk type gift emporiums selling souvenirs and local
handicrafts. When the sun sets, Poprad has a whole range of
nightlife to offer. From bars and restaurants filled with
tourists and locals through to nightclubs for those who want to
dance the night away.

"Getting out to explore the immediate
environment of a resort hotel can be one of the most exciting
parts of any holiday. Right on AquaCitys doorstep is a whole
different world just waiting to be discovered."
Spiská Sobota is one of the best preserved historical
settlements in Slovakia and is one of the six 'Royal Towns'
established in the twelth century. In the centre of the town ,
one of the best preserved Reniassace squares in Europe, time
appears to have stood still for 400 years. And it is right on
the doorstep of AquaCity. You can choose to follow the river
path to the East, or take the pavement along the road, but which
ever way you go you can be in the splendid town square in ten
minutes, even at the most gentle of strolls.

The village has a range of discrete hotels and bars, if you just
want to sit and savour the atmosphere, or there is the museum
with its range of artefacts and local handcrafts. Prominent in
the square is the Church of St. Juraj (George). Its
magnificently carved Late Gothic wing altars, as well as the
main altar carvings, are from the workshop of Master Pavol from
Levoca and are well worth a visit. Spiská Sobota is included in
UNESCO's World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
"Just a short walk from the front doors of
AquaCity there are a wealth of sights, sound and experiences;
something for all ages and tastes."

Castles, Caves
& Old Towns
If you have a
car and are willing to venture a little further from AquaCity
then the entire region is waiting to be discovered. For an area
so rich in art, culture and history it is impossible to cover
even all of the highlights, however here are some suggestions
for some great days out. Find below our top tips:

Levoca is often referred to in books as the jewel of the
Spis crown. In other words, it is the prettiest town in the
countrys prettiest region. Originating in the 13th century, the
town soon became prosperous thanks to its convenient location on
key trade routes, eventually blossoming into the most important
trading town in the Hungarian Kingdom. As Levoca grew in
stature, it also grew in size and magnificence. Accomplished
artists, architects and craftsmen were invited to the city to
help make it shine; they created much of the stunning Old Town
that remains today.

A short way beyond Levoca is Spis Castle. With an area of
over 4ha, Spis is the largest gothic castle in Central Europe.
In 1993, Spis Castle was included in UNESCO's World Cultural and
Natural Heritage List. Today, the castle houses the Spis Museum.
This permanent exhibition, and the superb views of the
surrounding countryside that the castle offers you, makes Spis
Castle well worth a visit.
A special half-day trip from AquaCity should include the
Dobsina ice cave. Less than an hours drive south along
Route 67 towards Dobsina is the Dobsinska ladova jaskyna Ice
cave (regular buses also run from Poprad, stopping near the
cave's entr ance). The cave's average temperature is -1 Celsius
(30 Fahrenheit), with a 98% relative humidity, adding up to a
perfect place for ice to settle and form. In 1870, Eugene Ruffini, an Italian naturalist, discovered the cave, whose
25-metre thick floor holds an estimated 145,000 cubic metres of
ice. In 1887, Descending down slippery steps, the cave's icy
breath instantly chills your bones. The walls are slick and
smooth, cold to the touch and massive. Considering the weight of
frozen water carved into giant halls and narrow tunnels is an
exhilarating experience.
